Mammoth Cave: UNESCO World Heritage Site Near Bowling Green, Kentucky

Last Fall, my husband and 2 sons took a ‘boys day’ and headed over to Mammoth Cave National Park near Bowling Green, Kentucky. We had both toured the cave as kids but now it was time to share the experience with our sons. Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system in the world and is full of amazing sites and things to experience.

Touring the cave is a unique Kentucky experience. It’s been many years since I hiked through Mammoth Cave. There are several tour options for varying degree of difficulties and accessible to a variety of skill levels.

Rolling hills, deep river valleys, and the world’s longest known cave system. Mammoth Cave National Park is home to thousands of years of human history and a rich diversity of plant and animal life, earning it the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve.

Entrance to the park is free year round and Mammoth Cave is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, although after hours tours and such can be limited. You can get more information on park hours here. As mentioned earlier, Mammoth Cave National Park offers activities for every level of ability. They strive to provide an accessible and inclusive experience for everyone and are continuously updating their existing infrastructure and programs to do such. The park also welcomes any questions and suggestions that you might have to help them meet this goal.

  1. A friend and I went to Mammoth Cave, KY years back. It was a great trip, and the tours of the caves are mind-blowing. Would recommend trip there to anyone. just watch your step in the caves 😉

  2. We visited Mammoth Cave earlier this year and loved it. I would love to go back and do one of the other tours that goes to the underground river – the River Styx tour, I think it was called.
