What do you know about the Springfield Armory? Did you know that George Washington commissioned the Armory as the first national location for the construction and creation of our military weapons in the early years of our country? On our recent road trip through Springfield, Massachusetts, Springfield Armory was definitely on our list to visit!

Visiting the Springfield Armory

The Springfield Armory in the city of Springfield Museum. This FREE, self-guided tour can take as little or as long as you want. Like any other museum, the more you take the time to read the exhibit information, the more you will learn and understand.

There is a 20-minute video available when you arrive that gives you history and background for the Springfield Armory. We try to take the time to watch these introductory videos when we visit museums because they really do give context for what you are about to see.

For nearly two centuries, the US Armed Forces and American industry looked to Springfield Armory for innovative engineering and superior firearms. Springfield Armory National Historic Site commemorates the critical role of the nation’s first armory by preserving and interpreting the world’s largest historic US military small arms collection, along with historic archives, buildings, and landscapes.

About the Junior Ranger Program

The National Park Service is celebrating 100 Years! We regularly enjoy visiting our National and State parks and exposing the kids to park rangers who are passionate about protecting and educating our next generation. There is a free Junior Ranger program available at all National Parks.

You can typically pick up a booklet at the visitors center or information desk that will let the kids do a scavenger hunt type search for the answers as they tour the national park. When they have completed the booklet, they can bring it back to the park rangers and get their badges or national park collectors cards.

For first time Junior rangers, the kids are walked through an initiation ceremony and inducted into the Junior Rangers park service program.

Since we love the shooting sports and have recently completed our first shooting competition, we found the Armory a fascinating piece of American history. It is interesting to see how technology has influenced the development of our modern shooting rifles.
