Where can you go in central Kentucky to see buffalo, elk, bear, eagle, deer, fish, birds, and even a wildcat? Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, KY. Over the past 10 years, we have been to Salato many times. Each time we go there have been new exhibits and more to see. If you live anywhere near Frankfort, this is one of those places that is worth visiting.
Salato offers a wonderful inside museum with interactive exhibits, fish tanks, and even a place to sit and just watch the birds. On one visit, we met my 90 year old grandma who enjoyed the inside education center. Then she enjoyed sitting in the bird viewing area while the kids and I walked the outdoor trails.
Don’t forget your camera when you visit! There are some great places to take fun pictures with the kids!
Once you step outside, there are numerous trails that you can follow to see the animals in natural wildlife habitats. The trails are wide and paved making them perfect for strollers or wheelchairs.
From the lush, eastern mountains to rolling prairies… from lowland marshes to clear running streams… you’ll experience Kentucky’s diverse regional ecosystems and the wealth of fish, plants, and animals that make this their home.
