Have you ever been to a museum that totally exceeds all expectations? When we arrived in Miles City, Montana we were tired and not sure we were up to anything more than a quick supper and a check in to our hotel. But we had heard that the Range Riders Museum was worth the trip so we raced in the doors just one hour before closing time. Range Riders Museum
The first question most people want to know when they plan a trip to a museum is what they can expect to see when they visit. When you visit the Range Riders Museum, be prepared to be amazed with how much they have on display. There are extensive exhibits that have been donated by local people.
Whether you are interested in guns, horseshoes, barbed wire, ladies hats, dresses, cowboy boots, covered wagons, native American artifacts, dishes, vintage medical equipment or about a dozen other things, you will probably find an extensive collection on display.
The Museum is a celebration of eastern Montana history in a collection of buildings where you can find exhibits ranging from the age of the dinosaurs to the 21st century. The Range Riders Museum has hosted visitors from all 50 states and 34 foreign countries.
On our visit, one of the co-owners of the museum gave us a personal tour and told us some stories behind some of the exhibits.
Donut from the Civil War: The story goes that a soldier’s mother baked some donuts before he left for the Civil War. When he returned home after the war, there was one donut left in the bottom of his bag. The donut has been preserved since 1864 and is now on display here at the Range Riders Museum.
One of the highlights of the museum is the street that takes you back in time to the early days of Miles City. Walk down the city street and see how things looked back in the pioneer days.
Wagon Depot
The largest building on the Museum’s acreage is the Wagon Depot where you can see an amazing collection of antique vehicles as well as collections of early office equipment and farm tools.
