Climbing Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse
Looking for lighthouses on the shores of any ocean is a favorite experience for many people. The island of Oahu has several iconic lighthouses that are worth exploring. One of the classic lighthouse hikes on Oahu is the Makapuu lighthouse trail. This trail winds along the side of the ridge and leads to an incredible view of the ocean. But don’t be surprised when you don’t find the lighthouse at the top of the hike.
The Makapuu lighthouse actually sits down close to the ocean level and you look down to find it, not up as expected.
The trail is paved and wide enough to feel safe and comfortable but does have an incline almost the entire way. While we were hiking to the top, we did pass several families with strollers, although I would not want to push a stroller for this hike as it is fairly steep at times.
There are multiple lookout areas along the way where you can stop and rest while enjoying amazing views of the water below and the switch-back trail behind you.
When you get to the top of the hike, there is a great overlook that give you an amazing view of Oahu.
Parking is free but limited, so come early to get a spot up close to the trailhead. Since people are constantly coming and going along the trail, if you don’t find a parking spot immediately, just wait a few minutes and someone will be ready to leave and give you their spot.
- There are no restrooms available at the trailhead.
