Bernheim Forest Giants

There are giants in Kentucky! Just visit Bernheim Forest right outside of Louisville, Kentucky to visit these three Giants! Bernheim Forest lets you experience nature up close with hiking trails, picnic areas, art sculpture and beautiful flowering trees, gardens and meadows, and of course, the GIANTS!

Bernheim Forest has been a beautiful place to enjoy nature for 90+ years. With over 16,000 acres of land, there are plenty of options to get out and experience nature. Whether you go in the early spring when the flowers and trees are just budding or later in the season when everything is in full bloom, Bernheim Forest is the place to go!

This week, we drove over to visit the Giants with my parents and the family. The sun was shining and the weather not too chilly. This is a perfect frugal family adventure just a few miles south of Louisville.

With 16,137 acres of land, there is an adventure waiting for everyone. Purchased by German immigrant Isaac W. Bernheim in 1929, the land was dedicated as a gift to the people of his new homeland. Today, over 270,000 visitors from the U.S. and abroad visit Bernheim each year.

There are three Giants along the trails in Bernheim Forest. Follow the path and enjoy, interact and engage with each of the giants. You are free to touch and even climb on certain parts of the Giants, but treat them with respect. We want them to stick around for as long as possible.

About the Sculptor:

In early 2019, Danish sculptor Thomas Dambo came to Kentucky and built three Giants! You can walk the trails and interact with each of the three Giants.

Thomas Dambo is an artist / designer based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Together with his crew Thomas makes beautiful and fun projects out of “trash” / recycled materials,

The three giants have names and personalities, of course: Mama Loumari now ‘lives’ at Bernheim with her children, Little Nis and Little Elina, and her third baby Giant, who is currently living in Mama’s belly.

Things to Know:

There is a $10.00 admission fee required per vehicle.
Come early to get the best pictures and experience.
Crowds are heavy as the Giants are very popular and are drawing huge crowds. If you come after 11:00 AM, be prepared to deal with heavy traffic, limited parking and lots of competition for the best pictures.
Wear your walking shoes. Due to heavy traffic, there are limited parking places and you will need to walk.

If you walk out to all three of the Giants, it is approximately 2 miles.
There are some small parking areas relatively close to the Giants but there is still walking required to get to the Giants.
Strollers are fine on the trails, but it will be hard to navigate a wheelchair.
The trails are not flat. If you have limited walking mobility, bring a cane, take it slow and take advantage of the park benches spaced along the path.
The Visitor Center has restrooms and there are portable toilets spaced out around the trails.
Bring a picnic and spend your day enjoying the beautiful nature and Giants in Bernheim.
